- Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) produced by cardiomyocytes increases in concentration when the myocardium is overextended. ProBNP thus produced is separated into BNP and NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B type natriuretic peptide) in the blood. Among these, NTproBNP exists in a stable state in the blood and is used as a cardiac biomarker because of its long half-life.
